A pressing appliance for textile workpieces, especially workpieces having a plurality of layers to be aligned with one another from an edge connection, the pressing appliance comprising at least one pair of pressing jaws which are movable relative to one another preferably vertically between a closing position and an opening position, is equipped, to avoid undesirable displacements between the workpiece layers and to avoid creases caused because the workpiece layers do not lie flat enough, with a holding plate which is located on at least one of the pressing jaws of the pair of pressing jaws and which, in the opening position, is set obliquely relative to the other pressing jaw and, during the transition into the closing position, is supported against transverse displacements on its edge located nearest the counterjaw.
