The invention relates to a monitoring apparatus for conveyor belts having monitoring elements which are installed at intervals in the conveyor belt and are intended for detecting conveyor belt damage, preferably longitudinal splits, one point on the conveyor belt being constructed in such a manner that it serves as a definition point for the conveyor belt to be monitored. The obtained signals from the monitoring elements are stored in an electronic store for every circulation of the conveyor belt and compared with themselves for every successive circulation with the aid of a computer which, in the event of changes in the compared signal parameters, produces a warning or switch-off signal.
