Metal values particularly manganese and/or cobalt are recovered from an oxonation synthesis catalyst as salts of organic acids by treating the product of the synthesis which comprises catalyst metal and metal values partly in solution therein in combination with organic acids and/or as carbonyl, with an aqueous solution of a mineral acid, separating the aqueous and organic phases, saponifying the organic phase with an aqueous alkaline material, separating the resulting salts of organic acids from the organic phase, treating the separated organic acid salts with the aqueous phase containing a mineral acid salt of the metal values, and extracting the resulting reaction product with an aliphatic alcohol (2-20 carbons).
