24 Disclosed is a method of producing ceramic-form-ing oxide powders with variable and predetermined sintering characteristics such as MgO, BaO, Ta2O5, ZnO, CeO, SnO, CaO, Cr2O3, CoO, As2O3, Sb2O3, ZrO2, TiO2, ThO2 Y2O3, SiO2, UO2, A12O3, and Tio2. There is a relationship between sintering rate of oxide powders produced from metal alkoxides and degree and nature of hydrolysis. This relationship between the degree of hydrolysis of the corresponding alkoxide and the density of the resulting oxide is determined by hydrolyzing several samples of the alkoxide using different amounts of water in diluted systems. The samples are sintered to produce the metal oxide and its density is measured. A desired density can then be achieved by using the amount of water of hydrolysis which corresponds to that density. Oxide powders with very high rate of sintering characteristics can be achieved by using at least 5 moles of water of hydrolysis per mole of alkoxide.
|
