Thermoplastic, high-molecular-weight material which can be processed in the melt and which contains at least one nickel complex derived from a ligand of the formula I <IMAGE> (I) in which R1, R2, R3 and R4, independently of one another, are -H, halogen or -CH3, R5 and R6, independently of one another, are -H or C1-C4alkyl, A is a para-phenylene radical of the formula II or a mixture of a para-phenylene radical of the formula II with an orthophenylene radical of the formula III <IMAGE> the proportion of ortho-phenylene radical in the mixture being not more than 60% by weight, and X1 and X2, independently of one another, are -H, halogen, -CH3, -OCH3 or -OC2H5, and Y1 and Y2, independently of one another, are -H, halogen, -CH3 or -OCH3, or Y1 is a radical of the formula <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> and Y2 is -H, or Y1 and Y2 together are -NHCONH- or -CONHCO-, where R7 is -H or C1-C4alkyl and R8 is -H, halogen, -CH3 or -OCH3.
