摘要 PURPOSE:To reduce the electrode area by forming an electrode at an end part of the surface of a ferroelectric substrate, charging liquid crystal and applying a high frequency to the electrode, and converting the potential distribution diagram of the surface acoustic wave on the surface of ferroelectric substrate into the orientation distribution diagram of the liquid crystal and thus forming a display body. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 2, 3, 12, and 13 are formed on the surfaces of ferroelectric substrates 1 and 11 at end parts and the liquid crystal 3 is charged in a glass plate 5, etc.; and the high frequency is applied to the electrodes 2, 3, 12, and 13 and the potential distribution diagram of the surface acoustic waves on the surfaces of the ferroelectric substrates 1 and 11 is converted into the orientation distribution diagram of the liquid crystal 3, thus forming the display body. The surface acoustic waves operate to form a potential generation area and change the orientation of the liquid crystal in the potential generation area. Therefore, an X-directional acoustic area and a Y-directional acoustic area are made to interface with each other for a surface display, thereby displaying a figure. Consequently, electrode wiring need not be provided in a matrix on the entire surface of the liquid crystal display body and the surface display is made with high yield.
