A process is useful for dyeing grey hair with dyes extracted from plants. In a first step, a non-oxidative, self-fixing dye is applied and allowed to act on the hair for 3-20 minutes while the hair swells under the action of heat and moisture. In a second step the vegetable dye is applied in order to obtain the desired tint, as well as to smooth the cuticule and thereby incorporate the self-fixing dye applied in the first step.
