Novel thiazolylalkyl and thienylalkyl esters of alpha -imidazolinone-nicotinic and alpha -imidazolinonebenzoic acids of formula I below have good selective herbicidal properties pre- and postemergence and also influence or inhibit plant growth. The Novel esters have the formula I <IMAGE> (I) wherein A is a stright chain or branched C1-C6alkylene bridge, Q and Q1 are each independently of the other nitrogen or the methine group, R1 and R2 are each independently of the other hydrogen or C1-C4alkyl, and X and Y are each independently of the other hydrogen, C1-C4alkyl, C1-C4alkoxy, C3-C4alkenyl, C1-C4haloalkyl or halogen, or together they are the butadiene radical.
