PURPOSE:To detect a focus based on an image signal of a prescribed area including an object to be extracted and to apply quick focus detection by storing in advance a characteristic of an object selected by a focus object selection means and extracting an object coincident with the characteristic of the object selected in the screen. CONSTITUTION:The object is displayed on the screen by an electronic view finder 14 as a display means of a focus detector such as camera and a focus object selection means 15 selects an object of focus adjustment. The characteristic of the object selected by the means 15 is stored in a picture memory 21 connected to the CPU 22. Moreover, a retrieval area selection circuit 18 sets an area retrieving the focus object by the selective operation of a photographer to control a gate circuit 12 and a finder 14. Then the CPU 22 extracts the object coincident with the characteristic of the object selected on the screen of the finder 14, the focus is detected based on the image signal of the prescribed area including the object to be extracted. |
