The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of 3-chloroisothiazole compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> and R<2> independently of one another represent hydrogen, alkyl or optionally substituted aryl, characterised in that polysulphides of the formula (II) <IMAGE> in which R<1> and R<2> have the abovementioned meaning and n represents the number 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, or their mixtures are reacted with chlorinating agents.
