The appliance comprises a main burner 46, a pilot 47 having three outlets 49, 51, 52, a spark-generating device 48 opposite the outlet 51 of the pilot, and a thermocouple 53 opposite the outlet 52 of the pilot. The thermocouple 53, when it is cold, actuates the closing of a solenoid valve stopping the inlet of gas into the appliance towards the pilot 47 and towards the main burner 46. A button 38 makes it possible to stop the operation of the appliance. The actuation of the button 38 causes a screen 54 to be inserted between the thermocouple 53 and the outlet 52 of the pilot 47 in order to influence it. The flame remains at the two other outlets of the pilot, which remains lit. The general shut-off of the gas will only take place when the thermocouple, having sufficiently cooled, has caused the solenoid valve to close. Use for keeping the pilot flame until the general shut-off by the thermocouple, in order to prevent the risk of a false operation by reopening the gas in the absence of the flame while the thermocouple has not yet caused the general shut-off. <IMAGE>
