The present specification discloses a friction pad assembly (1,3) for use in a disc brake and the support (11) for such an assembly. Known friction pad assemblies comprise a pad (1) of friction material which is secured to a back plate (3). Friction pad assemblies as designed for railway vehicles, are usually mounted in shoes and retained therein by a pad retaining plate which is usually bolted to the shoe. It can, however, be a tedious and difficult operation to replace such friction pad assemblies. Further, in use the shoe usually engages in guides, and frictional forces due to pad drag can hinder smooth axial operation.
<??>The friction pad assembly of the present invention has a generally rectangular back plate (3) with two retaining tabs (5) projecting from opposite side edge regions (7), at an angle to the general plane of the back plate (3). The support (13) or shoe is also generally rectangular and has a recess (15) formed in each of two opposing side edges (17), the retaining tabs (5) on the back plate (3) engaging snugly into these recesses (15). The support (13) has a further H-shaped recess (25) in its front face (23) within which an elongate spring plate (27) is secured so as to project beyond opposing ends (31) of said support (13). Thus, in use, the friction pad assembly can be quickly and simply mounted on the support (13) and when the brake is operated, the end region (29) of the spring plate (27) through which pad drag is passed to pad guides, flexes to thus allow for unhindered axial movement of the friction pad assembly and support (13). |
