Optically active 4-alkoxybiphenyls of formula (I) are new, where R1 is 4-14C alkyl having an asymmetric carbon atom; one of X1-X4 is F or Cl and the others are H; Y is R, OR, COOR or OCOR; R is 3-14C alkyl; when X1 is halogen, then Y is not R. Prepn. includes (a) alkylation of (opt. substd.) phenol with an optically active alkyl halide, (b) 4-bromination and Grignard coupling with a bromobenzene; (c) Friedel-crafts 4'-acylation of the prod. and subsequent oxidn. to the 4'-carboxylic acid; etc.
