A diesel internal combustion engine for vehicles, especially motor vehicles, is proposed, which has a fuel feed device, a starter motor, which can be switched on by a starter switch, and glow plugs assigned to the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine, which plugs can be switched on at least during cold starting of the internal combustion engine. In order to obtain a starting performance similar to that of a spark ignition internal combustion engine, it is proposed that the starter switch (1), when operated, be designed for the essentially simultaneous switching on of the starter motor (4) and the glow plugs (3) and for the delayed switching on of the fuel feed device (2), the time delay being controllable as a function of the operating condition of the internal combustion engine and/or of the glow plugs. <IMAGE>
