PURPOSE:To dispose a polarizing plate in the more optimum position and to improve contrast by setting the absorption axis of crossed nicols at the state of the smaller quantity of the transmitted light, of the two stable states while an electric field is not impressed. CONSTITUTION:The quantity IS2 of the transmitted light in the S2 state when the absorption axis of the crossed nicols is set in the average direction of the major axes of the molecules in the S1 state is provided if the two states of the two stable states S1, S2 are not equiv. while the electric field is not impressed. Said quantity is then compared with the quantity IS1 of the transmitted light in the S1 state when the absorption axis of the crossed nicols is set in the average direction of the major axes of the molecules in the S2 state. The absorption axis of the crossed nicols is set at the state of the smaller quantity of the transmitted light. The display with which the change of the quantity of the transmitted light from the time of the voltage impression to the memory time is smooth and obviates flickering is thereby obtd. |
