A VTOL Aeroplane has an opening 3 therethrough, the centroid of which is located over the aeroplane's centre of gravity, and at least one engine 1 directs air into the opening, the thrust direction being adjustable to suit the various phases of flight. The applied force axis or vector (TL) (Fig 1) has the same magnitude, line of action, and sense as the resulting vectorial sum of the forces required to operate the aircraft and it is equal or opposite to the sum of the resistances (DW) to be overcome in flight, namely the weight and the total drag. Forces may also be applied independently one to counteract the weight and the other to counteract the total drag. The engines 1 may rotate around the aircraft transverse axis operated by for example hydraulic rams or electric or hydraulic motors and a gearing system. Alternatively the engine propulsion nozzles, or fans, may be tiltable. <IMAGE>
