PURPOSE: To retard an explosion without giving a harmful effect to the battery performance by filling a porous plastic material containing most of small pores effective for retarding the explosion and a portion of large pores required for allowing the motion of gas and an electrolyte in a head space. CONSTITUTION: This hybrid explosion retarder 26 is composed of small hole pieces 28 oriented at random and large hole pieces 30. The small hole pieces 28 are effective for retarding an explosion, and the large hole pieces 30 serve as open spaces to cope with the backflow of an electrolyte and the motion of the existing gas to vent holes 22. Small pieces cut or crushed with foam materials 28, 30 having the convenient and optional size or shape can be used for the hybrid explosion retarder 26, and the small pieces are filled in the open head space H of each cell. The explosion of a storage battery can be safely retarded without hindering the electric performance or causing an additional danger on operation. |
