<p>PURPOSE:To effectively crush bubbles formed by passing a gas through an aqueous culture fluid containing organic cells, by bringing the bubbles into contact with a porous defoaming layer constituted of a water repellent material placed on a liquid surface. CONSTITUTION:An animal cell, plant cell or microbical cell is cultivated in a readily foamable liquid culture medium by aeration. In the process, bubbles formed by passing a gas through a liquid are brought into contact with a porous defoaming layer (preferably >=50% opening ratio and 2-50mm opening diameter) constituted of a water repellent material (preferably silane or siloxane) placed on a liquid surface to carry out cultivation in the liquid by aeration while crushing the bubbles. A defoaming layer is constituted of a water repellent material forming >=30 deg. contact angle between a horizontal surface and droplets of the culture fluid or a material coated or impregnated with the afore- mentioned water repellent material on the surface thereof is used as the above- mentioned defoaming layer. This method is especially effective in using an aqueous culture fluid (e.g. culture medium containing blood serum added thereto) having >=45dyn/cm<2>, especially >=90dyn/cm<2> surface tension.</p> |
