The unwanted positional isomers can be substantially removed from crude nitrobenzaldehyde by carrying out a treatment with 100-10,000% by weight of water and 1-30% by weight of an emulsifier, everything based on the dry weight of the crude nitrobenzaldehyde, at a temperature of 30-140 DEG C and at a pH of 3-14.
