PURPOSE:To increase the contrast of a liquid crystal display device by providing insulating films between oriented films consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and transparent electrodes and forming the PVA films to a specific thickness. CONSTITUTION:The oriented films consisting of PVA are provided on the transparent electrode to prepare transparent electrode substrates. Two sheets of such transparent electrode substrates are provided to face each other and a liquid crystal is sealed between the substrates to constitute a liquid crystal display device. The insulating films are provided between the PVA oriented films and the transparent electrodes. SiO2, Al2O3, polyimide, polyamide, etc., are used as the insulating films. The PVA oriented films are formed to <0.1mu thickness. A chiral smectic C phase, etc., of a ferroelectric liquid crystal are used as the liquid crystal. Since the PVA oriented films are provided, the uniform orientability and memory characteristic of the liquid crystal are improved. |
