Bis-styryl compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> denotes optionally substituted phenoxysulphonyl, C1-C10-alkylsulphonyl or optionally substituted phenylsulphonyl, R<2> and R<3> independently of one another denote hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy or optionally substituted phenyl, R<4> denotes fluorine, chlorine, cyano, optionally substituted carbamoyl, C1-C8-alkoxycarbonyl whose alkyl chain can be interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms, or optionally substituted phenoxycarbonyl and m, n, p and q are identical or different and in each case independently of one another denote 1 or 2, and their use as optical brighteners for polyesters.
