A hematology control or calibrator composition comprising a suspension of erythrocytes in a stabilizing medium, said erythrocytes having been contacted with an aliphatic unsaturated aldehyde having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, under conditions such that the stability of the erythrocytes in the stabilizing medium is increased without impairment of the ability of a lysing reagent to lyse the erythrocytes in a hematology analyser.
