PURPOSE:To suppress formation of ethylene as a by-product and improve conversion rate into the aimed compound, by specifying contact time of ethanol with sulfuric acid and dispersion thereof in subjecting the ethanol to dehydrating condensation in the presence of heated sulfuric acid to produce ethyl ether. CONSTITUTION:Ethanol is subjected to dehydrating condensation in the presence of heated sulfuric acid to produce ethyl ether useful as a solvent, anesthetic, explosives, combustion improvers, etc. In the process, the ethanol in the form of droplets or gas is blown into the heated sulfuric acid in preferably 60% concentration filled in a reaction vessel of the deep bottom having a structure preferably divided with a perforated plate and >=30cm liquid depth. The contact time of the ethanol with the heated sulfuric acid is kept at >=1sec, preferably >=5sec and dispersion of the contact time is simultaneously kept within 30% to provide >=65% conversion rate from the ethanol into the ethyl ether and afford the aimed compound in high yield without forming by-products, such as ethylene. |
