A gas containing nitrous oxides is introduced by pipe (28) to the air chamber (16) of a fluidised bed (20) of particulate material. Carbonaceous fuel is added to the bed (20) by pipe (24) and combustion of the fuel takes place in the bed (20). Additional air is introduced by pipe (26) above the bed (20). The carbonaceous material scavenges the oxygen in the nitrous oxygen.
