PURPOSE:To reduce the leak without increasing the contact surface pressure and permit the captioned mechanical seal to endure for a long period under the severe conditions by forming a spiral stop groove which is tilted rearwardly in the relative movement direction on a sealed edge surface and stops the outer edge surface positioned on the outer peripheral side. CONSTITUTION:A spiral stop groove 21 which is tilted on the rear side in the relative movement direction of the sealing edge surface 18 of a following ring 2 and stops the outer edge part positioned on the sealed edge surface outer peripheral 22 side is formed onto at least one out of the sealing edge surfaces of the following ring 2 and a seat ring. Then, a pressure in the radial direction which can resist the leak flow is generated efficiently for the fluid interposed between the minute gap on the sealed edge surface 18 by utilizing the relative turning movement of the sealed edge surface 18 by the groove 21, and a nearly perfect sealing fluid film is formed on the sealed edge surface 18. Therefore, the leak of the sealing fluid can be reduced considerably without increasing the contact surface pressure, and the operation for a long time under the severs conditions is permitted.
