Treatment of exhaust gases of an engine before they are transferred towards an analysis and data processing unit. In accordance with the invention the device comprises, in a closed enclosure 4, sampling lines 16 to 24, associated entry valves 25 to 33, each controlled by an external actuator 35 to 43. A filtration unit is provided, with two filters 45, 46 and two selection valves 47, 48; the exhaust gases are directed towards one of the filters while the other is purged by virtue of an associated pneumatic circuit. Downstream of the filter unit there is a pump 60 and, finally, a cold exit line comprising a gas drier 62. Application to the treatment of exhaust gases in an engine cell, for atmospheric or turbo-compressed petrol or diesel engines, with remote control of the unit by a central computer. <IMAGE>
