PURPOSE:To facilitate the reading of thick document and to transfer them efficiently by setting thick documents such as book to a book carrier and making the book carrier scan at a reading position. CONSTITUTION:An automatic feeder is provided with the book carrier 21, and an original glass 4 mounted on said feeder doubles that for an automatic original feeder. An engagement pin is fitted to the book carrier 21 and is engaged with a driving part, so that the book carrier 21 can scan at the reading position. By facing the read surface of a book down, it is set to the glass 4 of the book carrier 21, scanned and transferred at the reading position. On the other hand, a sheet-like original is entered between rollers 7 and 8 from a tray 3, sent to the document glass 4 and returned to the tray 3 through a document feed route 5. Since the book carrier 21 is incorporated, thick document such as a book can be easily read, and the structure is made compact.
