Date Nov. 3, 1988.The method of monitoring the state of an elongated object resides in the synthesis of the characteristics of an extended line (3) of transmission of wave energy, providing for employing said line (3) as a space-distributed responsive element and also as the channel transmitting information on variation of a monitored parameter of an elongated object (1). By situating said line (3) in the zone of monitoring the elongated object (1), shaping in said line (3) a reference signal of a predetermined space- and time-related pattern, and obtaining a measurement signal, the processing of these signals yields continuous distribution of the monitored parameter and a capacity of evaluating the state of the elongated object (1). The apparatus for monitoring the state of an elongated object comprises a series connection of a source (21) of modulated wave energy, a first spatial filter (23), the extended line (3) of transmission of wave energy, a second spatial filter (27), a data processing unit (22) and a video display terminal (31). The extended line (3) of transmission of wave energy is a multimode waveguide with a reference channel (13) and a measurement channel (1, 4), said channels being interactingly coupled.
