PURPOSE:To perform sufficient readout and storing operations, by setting potential applied to a light intercepting film higher than the depletion voltage of a photodiode at the time of reading out signal charges and lower than the depletion voltage at the time of storing signal charges. CONSTITUTION:The potential applied to a light intercepting A film 14 is set higher than the depletion voltage of a photodiode 2 at the time of reading out signals and lower than the depletion voltage at the time of storing signals. Therefore, the potential at the entrance of a readout gate 1 can be raised to such a degree that the transfer of signal charges can be made easily when signals are read out and can be lowered to such a degree that no signal charge leaks out when signals are stored. Accordingly, signals without residual images can be read out and the gate can be intercepted sufficiently at the time of storing signals.
