PURPOSE:To secure accurate positioning even with a small finger by putting a grid-shaped mark at an area corresponding at least to a first joint of a finger within a finger setting part where a fingerprint is read. CONSTITUTION:When a finger is set at a finger setting part 3, two pieces of linear projections 5 are set horizontally at an area corresponding to the first joint of the finger together with three vertical linear grooves 6. These projections and grooves form a grid-shaped mark 7. One of three grooves 6 is set at the center with other two grooves set the right and left positions respectively. When a fingerprint is needed for registration and collation, a finger 8 is set at the part 3 and the fingerprint part is pressed against a prism 1. In this case, the finger 8 is positioned based on the mark 7 and the right and left positions are decided by the relative relation between the grooves 6 and the outside of the finger 8. The front-back direction is decided by setting the first joint of the finger 8 at the projection 5. Thus the collating accuracy of fingerprints can be improved.
