In a sensor for a safety device for motor vehicles, which is arranged in or directly behind the outer skin of the motor vehicle, two deformation signal elements are located at a small distance one behind the other, the said elements supplying a signal in the event of a deformation of predetermined severity. The said signal is fed to an evaluation circuit, for example in the form of a time-window comparator which effectively distinguishes the operation case in which the triggering of the safety device is required from other operating cases in which it may be possible that both deformation signal elements supply a signal but this is not sufficent for the specified conditions. Such a case occurs for example if, on installing the sensor in a door, this door is closed violently or an obstacle penetrates the passenger compartment of the vehicle relatively slowly.
