The invention relates to a focusing device, preferably for microscopes, which permits two mutually independent movements of an objective or object stage holder in the direction of the object or the objective and away from it. An actuating drive (actuator), a gear (gear reducer unit), a ball bearing, an equalising device, and a holder are provided, the gear being designed according to the invention in such a manner that a stop is firmly connected to a driving toothed wheel which is located on a shaft so as to be rotatable, and a stop pin being firmly arranged on the shaft in the region of the stop. Furthermore, a block (obstruction) for the lens turret movement and a braking device for a soft stop are provided. In addition to the focusing movement a fast lifting is implemented for the objective change while achieving a cost-effective construction. Defects on the object or the objective or the movement mechanism which occur as a result of an inadvertent collision between the objective and the object during focusing are ruled out. <IMAGE>
