PURPOSE:To detect the defect of the threaded neck part of a container easily and automatically at low cost by extracting the length or directional vector components of the contour line of the binary-coded signal of the threaded neck part. CONSTITUTION:The container 5 is mounted on a rotary mechanism 6 and rotated, and a light source 7 is so arranged behind it that the projections and recesses of the threaded part are seen clearly. Light which is transmitted from the threaded neck part is converted by an image input device 1 into an electric signal, which is converted into a binary signal and preprocessed by a binary- coding and preprocessing circuit 2 as required, and inputted to a frame memory 4. The image data is supplied to a processor 4 to process image information on one round of the threaded neck part in order, and the contour of the threaded neck part image is tracked to extract its length or directional vector components, thereby inspecting the defect.
