A switched current regulator for an inductive load (L, RL), having, connected between the two poles (VC, VE) of a supply voltage source (B), a series circuit with the inductive load (L, RL), a current detector (RS), and a controllable switch (S) whose switching state is governed by the output signal of a comparator (K) which compares the detector signal with a reference signal which defines the target current value and comes from a reference signal source (Q, RR), and switches over the switch (S) whenever the detector signal reaches the reference-signal valve, and with a freewheel loop having a freewheel device (FL) connected in parallel with the inductive load (L, RL). The current detector (RS) is also arranged in the freewheel loop and the reference signal source (Q, RR) can be controlled and switched over, depending on the output signal of the comparator (K), between a high reference-signal value, on reaching of which by the detector signal the comparator opens the hitherto conducting switch (S), and a low reference-signal value, on reaching of which by the detector signal the comparator (K) flips the hitherto open switch (S) into a closed switch. The freewheel voltage produced by the freewheel device (FL) can be switched over between a low and a high value. <IMAGE>
