An optical disc (1) has a data record region for recording music pieces as well as a table-of-contents (TOC) region which stores the music numbers and the start and end addresses of the recorded pieces. In recording, an audio signal (S1) is converted into a digital signal (25) and recorded onto the disc (1) by an optical head (12) whilst the presence/absence of the audio signal is automatically detected by a microcomputer (17) and the start and end addresses are written onto a buffer memory (19). After a sorting process, the information is recorded onto the TOC region of the disc. In the reproduction, the contents of the TOC are transferred to the buffer memory and used to control the reproduction of an audio signal (50).
