The safety blade for a fencing sword has a longitudinal zone (7) of reduced cross-sectional area. This extends from the free end for at least part of its length, so as to concentrate the stresses acting on the blade. - When metal fatigue risks transverse breakage, the blade yields in the lengthwise direction, breaking into two sections to show that fatigue has taken place. It can incorporate two lengthwise grooves so as to form an H-section.
