This device comprises a rail (1) provided with a web (8) from which leave a fixing flange (2) and an assembly flange (18) of considerable height, and clips (20) capable of fitting into the assembly flange (18). The web of the rail supports the plates (12) of a first row, the row directly above. The clips have a substantially S shape and comprise a U-shaped channel (28) for receiving the assembly flange (18) and a shoulder (30) for fitting into a groove (24) of the edge of a plate (22) of the next or directly lower row which is thus firmly retained regardless of the depth to which the flange (18) penetrates into the receiving channel (28). <IMAGE>
