PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., in high yield on an industrial scale at a low cost, by reacting chlorotoluenes with NH3 and O in the presence of a specific metal oxide catalyst containing Fe, V and Sb. CONSTITUTION:Chlorobenzonitriles can be produced by reacting corresponding chlorotoluene having one or more chlorine atoms. in the molecule with ammonia and oxygen in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst of e.g. formula (X is element selected from Co, Ni, Sn, etc.; Y is Mo or W; Z is element selected from P, B, etc.; Q is element selected from Li, Na, etc.; the subscripts a, b-h and i are atomic ratios; when a=10, b is 0.05-10, c is 0-25, d is 5-60, e is 0-10, f is 0-5, g is 0-5, h is 0-2, i is number corresponding to the oxide formed by bonding each component and j is 20-200). The catalyst exhibits excellent activity and has high mechanical strength. |
