PURPOSE:To minimize the uneven coloration and color change of background colors by forming a liquid crystal layer into two-layered structure consisting of a pattern layer as well as a pattern layer and background display layer and forming both layers in such a manner that the layers can be controlled in lighting to different colors. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 8a (red), 8b (green) corresponding to sigment display parts 13 are formed on an transparent substrate 4, and a filter 10a (red), 10b (green) are alternately superposed and disposed thereon so as to face a common electrode 9 on a transparent substrate 5. A liquid crystal 11 is packed between the substrates. Electrodes and filter laminates for displaying red and green colors are similarly alternately disposed on a substrate 6 so as to correspond to a background display part 14 and to face the common electrode of the substrate 5. A liquid crystal 12 is then packed between the substrates. Polarizing plates 2, 3 are disposed on the outside of the substrates 4 and 6. The liquid crystals 11, 12 are of a twisted nematic type having positive dielectric anisotropy. The relative positions of polarizing axes thereof and the relative positions of the polarizing axes of the polarizing plates 2, 3 are selected as specified. The displaying having a wide variety and ample colors is permitted and the uneven coloration of the background, etc., are eliminated if the electrodes of the display parts and background parts are selectively discriminated and controlled. |
