Process and apparatus for treating organic exhaust gases

A process for treating organic exhaust gases is described, e.g. an exhaust gas which contains an organic solvent. In a first step, the exhaust gas is subjected to primary oxidation by irradiation with ultraviolet rays or by an oxidising solvent. In a second step, the organic exhaust gas subjected to primary oxidation is essentially completely oxidatively decomposed by irradiation with other ultraviolet rays until it becomes an inorganic harmless gas. An apparatus suitable for this includes first and second oxidising means which are arranged in a vessel into which the organic exhaust gas is introduced and in which it is successively treated, more precisely in a first oxidation section in which the organic exhaust gas is given a primary treatment by ultraviolet rays or by an oxidising solvent, in a second oxidising section the organic exhaust gas subjected to primary oxidation being finally or essentially completely oxidised.
