The column has a liquid or gas filled cylinder in which a piston with a valve and valve seat are fitted. Length adjustable column (1) consists of gas or liquid filled cylinder in which piston rod (7) and piston (6) are axially movable. Piston divides cylinder ino working spaces (3,4). The free end of the piston rod carries a connector sleeve (8). The free end of the cylinder carries e.g. a connector lug (9). Passage duct (5) is opened or closed by an external operating handle (10) for axial movement of operating rod (14). Gas or air pressure in working spaces (3,4) controls movement of valve (12) which cooperates with valve seat (11).
