PURPOSE:To obtain stably a high-MW polyarylene sulfide of a low melt flow, by contacting a dihaloaromatic compound with an alkali metal sulfide in a polar solvent in the presence of a specified aromatic nitro compound. CONSTITUTION:A polyarylene sulfide is obtained by contacting a dihaloaromatic compound (e.g., p-dichlorobenzene) with an alkali metal sulfide (e.g., sodium sulfide or lithium sulfide) in a polar solvent such as an N-methylpyrrolidone in the presence of a monohaloaromatic nitro compound and/or a dihaloaromatic nitro compound. Examples of said mono- or di-haloaromatic nitro compounds include 2,5-dichloronitrobenzene, 2-nitro-4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl ether and 2,5- dichloro-3-nitropyridine.
