PURPOSE:To prevent stagnation of sheets in a paper discharge section by providing a means for detecting the conveying time of a sheet in a paper feed section and a conveyance control means for driving the sheet discharge section for a time according to the conveying time of the sheet detected by the detecting means so as to convey the sheet. CONSTITUTION:When a sheet does not reach a paper discharge sensor 10 within a predetermined time from the turn-on timing of a registering roller 5, (time of movement of the sheet from the point (a) to the point (b) + marginal time), a delay due to a jam is detected. Further, when a sheet stays in the paper discharge sensor 10, exceeding a predetermined time from the timing at which the sheet enters into the paper discharge sensor 10, (the time of movement of a sheet having a maximum size capable of being used in the copying machine+marginal time), a stagnation due to a jam is detected. Further, when a sheet passes through the sensor 10 in the predetermined time, it is judged that the sheet is discharged so as to complete a copying sequence. Further, detection and control are made to obtain such a relationship that the amount of paper feed is greater than the amount of paper discharge. With this arrangement, it is possible to prevent stagnation of sheets in a sheet discharge section, and to minimize the rotating time of a motor M2.
