Removal of surplus water from dialysis patients by ultra-filtration involves feeding the blood over one side of a semi-permeable membrane exchange element.The rate of ultra-filtration flow is controlled in dependence on the difference measured in a blood circuit parameter before and after the exchange element.This parameter may be the flow rate as measured by an electro-magnetic flow meter, or the haematocrit value (vol. ratio of blood cells to plasma) measured optically or by electrical conductivity.Deviations from standard values for parameters are used to control the ultra-filtration pump.
