The novel compounds are chiral esters made from alpha -substituted carboxylic acids and mesogenic hydroxyl compounds which are characterised by the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which the symbols have the following meanings: MO is the moiety of a mesogenic hydroxyl compound MOH after removal of an H, where the radical MO is expressed by the formula (II> R<2 >- (A<1>)n1 - (B-)n2(A<2>)n3 - O (II> where R<2> is straight-chain or branched (C1-C12)alkyl or alkenyl, where one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups can be replaced by O and/or S atoms, or, if n1 = 1, is alternatively F, Cl, Br or CN, A<1> and A<2>, independently of one another, are 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dithian-2,5-diyl or 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octylene, where these groups may also be at least monosubstituted by F, Cl, Br, CN and/or (C1-C12)alkyl (one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups are optionally replaced by O and/or S atoms), B is CO-O, O-CO, CH2-CH2, OCH2, CH2O, CH = N, N = CH, N = N or N(O) = N, and n1, n2 and n3, independently of one another, are 0, 1 or 2, where n1 and n3 are not simultaneously 0, Y is F, Cl, Br, CN or CF3, and R<1> is branched (C3-C9)alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, where the compounds where R<1> = branched (C3-C7)alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, Y = F, Cl or Br, R<2> = (C1-C11)alkoxy, A<1> and A<2> = phenyl, n1, n3 = 1 and n2 ...
