PURPOSE:To form a surface layer having superior scuffing resistance and superior wear resistance at high temp. by granulating Mo powder, self-fluxing Ni or Co alloy powder and hard carbide powder in a specified ratio and by thermally spraying the resulting granulated powder of a proper particle size on the surface of a base material. CONSTITUTION:25-60wt.% Mo powder, 25-50wt.% self-fluxing Ni alloy powder and/or self-fluxing Co alloy powder and 5-25wt.% hard carbide powder of <=10mum average particle size contg. one or more kinds of elements selected among the groups IV, V and VI elements of the periodic table are granulated to obtain granulated powder of 10-105mum particle size used as a material for thermal spraying. The powder is thermally sprayed on the surface of a base material to form a wear resistant surface layer having a structure contg. the hard carbide particles dispersed in a matrix consisting of Mo and one or both of the self-fluxing alloys.
