A hand-operable pad-type printing machine can be operated by one hand, thereby enabling the operator to handle articles (X) to be printed with the other hand, but can obtain printing precision which would be difficult to achieve by other hand-operated pad-type printing machines. A printing pad (6) can be raised and lowered by a handle (20) and moved between an inner inking position in which it can engage an ink pad (3) and an outer position in which it can print an article (X). A roller (24) and an abutment plate (25) prevent up and down movement of the handle (20) except in the inner and outer positions and cam arrangements control operation of an inking plate (7) and a doctor blade (8).
