An oxygen jet cutting machine for cutting the web of a beam to castellated shape, comprises a carriage 11 having two pairs of wheels such as 59, 60 on vertical axes spaced apart to engage one flange 64 of the beam, a pair of rollers 53, 58 adapted to rest on the upper edges of the beam flanges, and a slide 21 carrying the cutting burner 15 movable transversely of the carriage and driven by an endless member such as a chain 40 trained around four wheels 37 whose axes define a rectangle parallel to the plane of the beam web. One of the chain wheels 37, Fig. 4 (not shown) is driven through an electromagnetic clutch (28) and bevel gearing (32), (33) by an A.C. motor (27), whose speed is controlled by a siliconcontrolled rectifier. The chain wheel drive is also connected to a horizontal shaft 49 which drives through gearing 50, 51 a parallel shaft 52 carrying the roller 53. Both rollers 53, 58 are also inter-connected by a drive chain 55. Slide 21 runs along guide rods 41 and carries guides 43, 44 for a slide member 48 engaging a pin 46 attached to the chain 40. The member 48 thus describes a rectangular path causing the burner to reciprocate transversely simultaneously with the longitudinal movement of the carriage. The chain wheels 37 are adjustable to take different lengths of chain for varying the castellations which are cut. Wheels 13 facilitate handling of the carriage. |
