PURPOSE:To measure an alcohol concn. with high accuracy by providing porous electrode to both faces of stabilized zirconia, impressing voltage between the two electrodes and passing the current with the hydrogen ions generated by electrolysis of gaseous alcohol as a carrier. CONSTITUTION:The gaseous alcohol passes a very small gas flow hole 4 of a cap 5 provided on an anode side and arrives at an anode 2 when an alcohol sensor is installed in an inert gas which does not contain oxygen and hydrogen or moisture and contains the alcohol. The gaseous alcohol is electrochemically decomposed by the anode 2 when the voltage is impressed between the anode 2 and cathode 3 at the high temp. maintained by a heater 6. The hydrogen ions formed by the electrochemical decomposition of the gaseous alcohol are migrated from the anode 2 toward the cathode 3 through a solid electrolyte 1 by a so-called ''pumping'' effect; namely, the current with the hydrogen ions as a carrier flows. The alcohol concn. is known by measuring the limiting current value. |
