PURPOSE:To permit formation of a tape having excellent weatherability by coating a magnetic coating compd. prepd. by dispersing ferromagnetic metal or alloy powder into a binder contg. a copolymer resin essentially consisting of vinyl chloride, polyurethane resin and epoxy resin having >=60 deg.C m.p. on a nonmagnetic base. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic coating compd. prepd. by dispersing the ferromagnetic metal or alloy powder into the binder contg. the copolymer resin essentially consisting of the vinyl chloride, the polyurethane resin and the epoxy resin having >=60 deg.C m.p. is coated on the nonmagnetic base. Since the binder contains the epoxy resin, HCl and Cl desorbed by the epoxy group are captured and the magnetic layer is stabilized. Salts are no longer formed even if metal ions are desorbed into the magnetic layer and the additional generation of de-HCl by the salt acting as a catalyst is obviated. The increase in drop-out and the degradation in recording and reproducing performance are thereby obviated and the high weatherability is obtd.
